Apple Fitness Plus – some first impressions.
I just did a 20 min HIIT with Kim burning 218 Calories and it was perhaps a mistake before filming this…

Apple Fitness Plus has now rolled out to the first launch countries, though not without a slightly bumpy ride. Once the Software updates that we’ll talk about later in the video went live at 1800 GMT you needed to download them on the platforms you needed, then for iPad install the Fitness App, but here’s the 1st issue, iPads would tell you they couldn’t run it. I’m sure this will be fixed quickly, but its a frustration on launch day. As is the three month trial with Apple Watch purchases not seeming to… well be there. Again, I’m sure it will be sorted, but it does mean a lot of people are hesitant to get going with Fitness plus.

Google, YouTube and much more failed for a while, and affected stuff you might not have considered.
At 11:47 GMT yesterday, well, Google broke. Not some slow load times, but Gmail, Google Drive, YouTube, Android’s Play Store, Google Maps… you get the drift. Also, Nest and the rest of Google Home, meaning users couldn’t turn on their lights for nearly an hour. Even services like Pokemon Go and Discord all went down at the same time, presumably because of back end services that accessed resources on Google.

Of course things like this do happen from time to time, but its a fun reminder of just how reliant we all are on cloud services for many different things these days. While I don’t make too much use of Google’s services in general, of course YouTube is a part of Google and was itself unavailable for almost an hour at the time, which also happens to be right when our video goes live at 12UTC. That causes us problems with the fact that generally we get a great core of viewers who watch along live (big up the Notification Squad) and chat which we missed out on, as well as with the system being down we lost early views and comments, which hurts us in the YouTube algorithm.

Now I make a point of not talking about YouTube algorithms often as I think its pretty boring for people who aren’t making videos every day. To be even more real, the algorithm is boring for me too. But I know that you guys might have missed the show yesterday so if you did, please check it out, I think it was a pretty good one, and you can find it up there.

Along with Fitness Plus, most of Apple’s software versions got OS updates yesterday.
Apple Video Apps also got an update with new sharing options for Final Cut, iMovie, Compressor and Clips.
iOS 14.3 adds the ability for Siri to roar like a Lion, and other animals too, let me know in the comments which noises you’ve been able to make this advanced personal assistant replicate.
It also adds Pro Raw support (I feel this needs its own full video) for Pro iPhone 12s, some new video frame rates, home screen shortcuts not going via the Shortcuts App any more so you can make your home screen all aesthetic AF.
Ecosia Search engine has been added as an option in Safari, the Apple TV App gets a new TV+ discovery tab and Cardio fitness has been added to Apple Watch which tracks your VO2 Max.
Weather has added Air Quality features for a number of countries, health has added some pregnancy health features and third party tracker support has been added to the Find My app. Thats right, this is what would support AirTags, so they could well be just around the corner.
