A PSA – Be careful what you pick up this Black Friday!

Hey guys, it’s Thanksgiving week which means something in America and nothing in the rest of the world as far as I know, except that the next day Black Friday happens so, you know, that’s nice and some stuff might be cheaper. So, Happy Thanksgiving America!

Just be careful what you pick up – the iPad Pros are currently at an all time low price (links below if you want one) but remember they’re powered by A12Z, which is a 2 year old processor, and we’re expecting an A14X version fairly soon, which will likely be equivalent in power to the M1 Mac chips at its core.

That being said, there will almost certainly be good deals to be had on AirPods, Cases for your new phones, very good deals on Intel Macs for anyone not ready to jump into Apple Silicon just yet and probably the original HomePod with its crazy good sound and new features for Dolby Atmos Apple TV support. If you’re shopping for anything on Amazon I’d really appreciate you clicking through from the links in the description which helps to support the channel and doesn’t cost you a penny. Redesigned MacBooks due to launch in second half of 2021 with Apple Silicon

This comes from Ming Chi Kuo, and is inline with what I was expecting for the next M series refresh to M2, with the M1X that we’ll come to next appearing sooner most likely in March. While Kuo has previously mentioned this being the 14” and 16” MacBook Pros, I’m still not convinced that the smaller MacBook Pro is planned to go up to 14”, I still not convinced they would up the display size rather than shrinking the chassis given the lack of thermal issues with M Series.

What would M1X performance numbers look like?
Luke Miani – 12 core chip – M1X prediction. 4 Icestorm, 8 Firestorm. Kinda avoided the question of Geekbench score – but what would that mean?

Just done some back of the napkin maths BTW…

Now… I am not a systems Architect… nor do I know if that is either a thing, or if it is, the kind of thing who would know this. BUT – here’s my working just so you know.

It’s rumoured that the M1X would be a BigLittle with 4 IceStorm cores and 8 FireStorms. Thats 4 efficiency cores, just like the M1, but double the high performance cores, so based on the Mac mini scores of 1703 single core and 7381 multi.

1703 x 4 Firestorm cores gives 6812, so the efficiency cores would seem to be contributing 569 points when the benchmarks are running. So we’ll ramp that to 8x firestorm and assume the efficiency cores contribute the same.
