I have a Mac mini M1 with 8gb of Unified Memory, and an M2 MacBook Air with the same. But I won’t be able to carry that on with M4…

According to Our Father, who art in Bloomberg, Mark Gurman, Apple is currently testing four new Mac models and none of them have no less than 16GB of memory on board. With Apple Intelligence launching later in the year, it may well be to make sure systems don’t get bogged down while running the AI models, so RIP to my systems that both have 8GB I guess.

Now Apple did say that their Intelligence features would work on all Apple Silicon Macs, back to M1 without specifying the need for 16gb of memory, but it does seem that the iPhone and iPad needs a minimum of 8, and they don’t multitask in the same way, which may well be the bigger difference here.

We’re expecting to see updates to the smaller Mac mini that I talked about in the video up here, an updated iMac with M4 and MacBook Pro(s). That said, this feels awfully like all the stuff being tested at the moment is actually the base, or even binned M4 chips, and not the M4 pro or Max chips, at least at this stage. Now that doesn’t mean we won’t see the higher end MacBook Pros arrive this fall, especially as with the redesign, I’d be very surprised if the Mac mini with M4 Pro didn’t debut at the same event.

Beyond the memory updates, the chips in testing, which have the identifiers 16,1, 2, 3 and 10 have 8 to 10 CPU and GPU cores each, with the 10 core version matching what we’ve seen in the M4 iPad Air.

The event for these Macs is expected to be around October, though it seems Apple will release macOS Sequoia earlier than recent years in September, around the iPhone even that should have invitations out any time now. And possibly, the new iPads, iPad 11th gen and iPad mini 7 could also arrive in October, as the latest rumours suggest it’s just the iPhones, Watches and AirPods at the September Event.

So assuming Apple don’t up the prices off the back of this generous Ram boost – will M4 be enough to make you upgrade your Mac? This may be the first time its a compelling upgrade from M1 or M2 for me…

Thanks to the patreans and let me know your thoughts in the comments below! See you in the next one!
